Asher Brown Durand, "The Indian's Vespers"

     It has been a long time since we looked at an American landscape, so that is our topic for this week. Our artist is Asher Brown Durand (1796-1886).  He was a member of the Hudson River School, who were a group of artists devoted to painting the Hudson River Valley, the Catskills and Adirondack areas of the American East. Although each painter adopted his own set of objectives, basically they romanticized the area, making it lusher and more idyllic than actual life. They also included everything!   Far more than a person's eye can absorb if on the actual scene.     One thing that is interesting about this is that it was very popular.   This painting was completed in 1847, long before photography, so a landscape painting was the only means city people could see the great wilderness out there, beyond their homes.  So to study all of nature in one image was wonderful.      In 20 plus years, especially in Fr...

Carl Larsson, "The Kitchen, From A Home"

     I thought it time for a little contrast, something sweet and pretty.  But this week's image isn't just a nostalgic mismatch, but a professionally composed arrangement of a scene.   Carl Larsson (1853-1919) did this work in 1898 after he had achieved considerable success as an artist.  The family had recently moved into a new home where Carl and his wife, Karin designed and decorated the whole of the interior.  It was then that Carl created a series of 26 watercolors of his family active inside this new home.  Here we have "The Kitchen".        Allowing our eye to flow through the painting we notice a lot of detail, a lot telling us how meals were prepared in this space.  Two things catch me and make me smile.   First is that the window is open and a nice breeze coming in. Alice Neel, " Geoffrey Hendricks and Brian"

  Of all the subject to select from in painting, I believe portraiture can be the most difficult.  Not only must the artist be able to handle the medium, but also to capture a likeness, usually to satisfy the tastes of the subject.   So today we have one of the greatest portrait painters of the late 20th century, Alice Neel, (1900-1984).      This painting is taken from a career-spanning exhibition of her work that is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which is a huge accomplishment signifying the acclaim she is now experiencing some 40 years after her death.     Neel had an extremely difficult life which I will not write about, but she is worth Googling.  What I want to write about is this painting.  It was done in 1978 when she was living in New York City.  I hope you find it as amazing as I do.     Let me point out a few things: first, much of the figures are outlined in a bright blue...
